About me

I believe in the power of research to solve problems. My research looks at how to support Australians who face compound disasters - disasters that overlap, repeat, or occur in quick succession. I am interested in finding innovative ways to move beyond traditional approaches to emergency management, which have been based on the ideas of single disasters that occur ‘one at a time’, to better recognise and address the complex realities that many people face through compound disasters. My research involves working with survivors and policymakers to carry out a new policy experiment. I first became interested in disasters after working in a local hospital in Fukushima following the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. In 2020, I moved to Australia to begin work as a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Since that time, I have worked on recovery from the 2019-20 bushfires and repeat flooding disasters. When I am not working, I love being out in nature and birdwatching.
Children born today will face up to 7 times more climate disasters than the current generation of adults. This research looks at how to ensure that we can meet the needs of people facing these disasters, particularly when they repeat, overlap or occur in quick succession.
